The Importance of Edges
The quality of a background removal is judged almost entirely by its edges. A good cutout has smooth, natural transitions that don't look like the subject was "cut out with scissors." QuickRemove's AI model generates precise masks, and the refinement tools let you perfect the result.
AI-Generated Masks
When you drop an image into QuickRemove, the AI model analyzes the entire image and generates a detailed mask. This mask assigns each pixel a confidence score — how likely it is to be foreground (subject) vs background. The result is a soft, natural mask with smooth transitions, not a harsh binary cut.
Edge Refinement Tools
Feathering
Feathering softens the transition between subject and background. A small amount of feathering creates natural-looking edges. Too much creates a blurry halo. QuickRemove lets you adjust feathering to find the sweet spot for each image.
Smoothing
Smoothing reduces jagged or uneven edges along the mask boundary. This is especially useful for subjects with angular or geometric edges where the AI mask might have small irregularities.
Sharpening
Edge sharpening enhances the crispness of the mask boundary. Use this when you want very defined, clean edges — common for product photos and graphics.
Color Decontamination
When a subject is in front of a colored background, some of that background color can "spill" onto the subject's edges. For example, a person in front of a green wall might have a slight green tinge on their outline. Color decontamination detects and removes this spill, giving you clean, true-color edges.
Manual Mask Editing
When the AI result needs fine-tuning, QuickRemove provides manual mask editing tools:

Auto-Enhance

Smart Crop
After background removal, the transparent area around the subject is often unnecessary. Smart crop automatically trims the image to the non-transparent bounds, removing excess transparent space and reducing file size.
